For now, I will most likely stick with Berettas for carry and practice, splitting my time between the PX4 Compact, Wilson Combat 92G Compact Carry, and the full size 92G. That said, I'm still making room to try out some more binary action, though it's likely to spread out over a longer period of time than I originally thought. Sig Sauer's classic P220 series was next on the list of pistols to evaluate, and I went straight to the top shelf of their lineup with the Sig Sauer P229 Legion series. The Sig P229 Legion is one of three pistols that Sig Sauer introduced last year with the introduction of the Legion series. These are semi-custom factory variations of classic Sig pistols with some premium features that you don't get on standard models. Some of these features include an improved front strap, undercut protection, G10 grip, modified action and trigger, low-profile slide and disable lever, and high-visibility night sights. This is the 9mm version of the P229, but is also available in .40 S&W and .357 Sig.

Since starting my experiment with traditional double-actions earlier this year, most of the guns I've talked about here have been Berettas. So far I've settled on Berettas, but there are other good choices. Sig Sauer is on par with Beretta in terms of overall quality and reputation, and the P229 Legion should represent the best they have to offer right now for a double carry pistol.

These guns have been around for about a year, so there have been plenty of other reviews and videos and discussions online, and one of the topics that keeps coming up is whether the Legion series is worth the extra cost. This gun is about $300 more than the standard P229, so the Legion theme adds 33% to the price.

That alone turned some off, but what doesn't help much is that Sig's marketing for the Legion series is... a little over the top. They made a big deal out of this whole warrior lifestyle thing and the gun comes with membership to the exclusive Legion club. Honestly, I think Sig may have underestimated the skepticism in the shooting community because it seems like a lot of people were under the impression that "Legion" is just code for "overrated".

I can see why people think that. It might cost well over $300 to add all those extra features to a regular Sig, but if you don't really need or want those features, the Legion guns might seem like a rip off. But I will argue that despite the self-aggrandizing marketing, the Legion pistols actually have some very well thought out features that some people really appreciate.

I've put close to 1000 rounds through this Sig in the past few weeks, including my weekend at the Rangemaster Advanced Instructor Course in Texas. I've shot other dual-action Siggas before, but this is the first one I'm seriously considering. Coming from Beretta pistols, one of the things I immediately missed was the slide mechanism. A lot of people don't like this Beretta design, but you can't disarm the Sig without breaking the support handle. I would prefer to have the ability to disarm when off target and keep the gun down at the ready without disturbing the grip. . So to me that's a slight advantage to Berettas.

Another thing is that in my hands the double action trigger on the Sig seems to break a little further back than on the Beretta. Not much of a disadvantage to the P229 Legion, because it has a very smooth trigger, but I had to be more careful about pulling the trigger on targets beyond about 20 yards.

What To Look For In An Everyday Carry, Edc Pistol

Other than that, the trigger on this pistol is excellent. The trigger itself is Grayguns intermediate adjustable trigger and also has a Sig short reset upgrade and a polished and tuned action. What this means when you're actually shooting is that it's easier to use the trigger on sharp strings. When you combine that with moderate recoil and a bright green front sight that can be seen in daylight, it shouldn't take much for an experienced shooter to make quick and accurate hits with this pistol.

Accuracy on the bench was also really impressive. It shot several five-round groups at 25 yards, and I had the best results with the 124-grain Federal HST and 115-grain Speer Gold Dot, and accuracy with the metal-jacketed everyday ammo wasn't bad either.

Using this gun in the instructor class, the front strap frame and G10 grips provided a distinct advantage when I was shooting with sweaty hands all day in the Texas summer heat. But I think a more useful upgrade is the undercut cover. It allows for a slightly higher grip on the gun and is also useful for achieving an even shot before removing it from the holster. This small depression gives you tangible confirmation that your hand is as high as it can go on the front string.

The low profile slide helps avoid a problem common with classic Sigs where a strong hand's thumb accidentally rides on the slide and prevents the slide from staying open on an empty magazine. I've had that problem with Sigs before, but it wasn't a problem with the P229 Legion. A side effect to be aware of is that it's a bit harder to engage the smaller lever when reloading a slide, so you may have to practice until you get the hang of it, or just use the top rack method to release the slide.
